PUMALIN DOUGLAS TOMPKINS NATIONAL PARK

Pumalín Park was created by conservationist Douglas Tompkins, as an initiative to preserve and protect the pristine ecosystem of this part of Northern Patagonia. It was later donated to the country and became a National Park in 2018. Pumalín means “watery place” in Huilliche language. It is a beautiful mosaic of ancient forests that abruptly give way to fjords, rivers, granite walls, glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls and lakes suspended in mountain heights. The deep forests of Pumalín reach all the way to the fjords, creating one of the most spectacular coastlines on the planet, where hundreds of waterfalls cascade down from glaciers, falling over steep granite walls, as the Michinmahuida and Chaitén Volcanoes crown the landscape. It’s also home to 25% of the thousand-plus-year-old Alerce trees (Fitzroya) still growing in Chile today. Walk through the forests of Alerces, look for marine life from Caleta Gonzalo; explore the Reñihué and Comau Fjords; hike up the Chaitén Volcano, and visit the glacier found on the Michinmahuida Volcano.
