Atacama - Chile
About
The once-in-a-lifetime miracle of the blossoming desert is a unique phenomenon only witnessed in the Atacama Desert, when “El Niño” ocean current brings an unusual amount of rainfall to the world’s driest location, creating a spectacle of colorful flowers. Travelers may spot over 200 types of flowers, such as lilies, morning glories, añañucas, and goathorns blossoming in the Atacaman arid landscape. It is truly extraordinary to see a barren desert transformed into a gigantic colorful field of lovely flowers. The phenomenon usually occurs between August and September and may extend into November (mid-Spring). Travelers will observe the desert from the best viewing points: El Temblador beach near La Serena in Quebrada Honda, or in Totoral Bajo, Carrizal Bajo, Huasco or Caleta Totoral.
Some of the desert dwellers that may be captured on this encounter are Vicuña camelids, usually found in herds; different species of flamingos; chubby Vizcachas, Chinchilla-like rodents that sunbathe on the rocks; Guanaco camelids; and many other altiplanic ecosystem species. A local wildlife expert will accompany travelers informing them both about photography and wildlife along the way and showing them where these animals are most probably found. A recipe for success
In Elqui’s skies, the Milky Way looks milkier than ever.
