ACONCAGUA VALLEY - CHILE
The Aconcagua Valley is a wine-producing region in Chile, located 100 kms north of Santiago. It was long thought that this hot, dry valley was not suitable for growing wine grapes but the quality of the region's modern-day Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot have proved this idea wrong. The conditions offered by this valley allow the vines a slow but constant growth process, producing wines with mature flavors and full of body, that are a part of the traditional local country life and exported around the world.
The valley takes its name from the eponymous river flowing through it, which in turn is named after Mt. Aconcagua (6,960 m). This is the highest mountain in the Americas that directly contributes to the terroirs found in the valley below. Red grape varieties dominate the production in the valley, with Syrah in particular being well adapted to the region's hot temperatures and long ripening season. Offering a well-rounded ethno-tourism experience and high quality standards, Aconcagua Valley is a wonderful wine tasting destination.
The Chilean Altiplano is part of a high plateau shared by Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru.
